CAC versus CPA: what is the difference?

CPA is usually the cost of a defined acquisition or conversion action. CAC is the cost of acquiring a new customer and may include a wider set of costs. The important part is using consistent definitions. A cheap conversion is not necessarily a cheap new customer if many conversions come from existing buyers.
