How AI Search Is Changing the Way Customers Discover Businesses

For years, digital discovery has been organised around a familiar behaviour:

Type a few words into a search box. Scan a list of results. Click.

That behaviour is not disappearing, but AI changes the interface.

People can now describe the whole problem.

“Our ecommerce revenue has stalled even though paid media ROAS looks okay. What should I investigate?”

That is a much richer signal than “ecommerce consultant”.

Discovery moves closer to diagnosis

AI can help users frame the problem, compare approaches and decide what kind of solution they need before visiting a website.

For service businesses, that creates an interesting opportunity.

The website does not only need to rank for the service category. It needs to contain useful source material around the problems that create demand for the service.

That changes content strategy

A generic page saying “I offer digital consultancy” has limited value as a source.

A detailed answer explaining why ROAS can improve while revenue falls gives an AI system something specific to retrieve and reference.

That is why I am much more interested in building a body of practical answers than producing a traditional company blog.

Traditional SEO still matters

AI systems still need content they can discover and understand. Crawlability, internal linking, clear pages, structured information and reputable external references remain important.

This is not a reason to abandon SEO for a new three-letter acronym.

Original expertise becomes more valuable

If an AI can produce a generic definition in seconds, publishing another generic definition is not much of a moat.

First-hand experience, diagnostic frameworks, examples, data and a clear point of view are harder to commoditise.

That suits experienced operators.

Measurement changes too

Visibility may include citations and mentions inside AI answers, not only visits.

Where tools expose it, I want to track:

  • AI referral traffic
  • cited pages
  • query or topic themes
  • enquiries and booked conversations
  • assisted brand discovery

The commercial opportunity

The most interesting moment may not be when somebody searches for a consultant.

It may be when they explain the problem that makes them need one.

If your content is useful at that moment, AI discovery can move you much earlier into the decision journey.

That is the opportunity I think businesses should be preparing for now.

If you want your business to show up at the moment someone is explaining their problem, not just searching a category, let's talk about what that would take.
