How Do You Know When Your Business Needs Senior Digital Leadership?
Digital complexity tends to creep up on organisations.
A website becomes ecommerce. Ecommerce adds paid media. Then CRM, marketplaces, affiliates, analytics, consent, apps, agencies, data and AI arrive.
Nobody formally decides that the operating model has become too complicated. It just does.
Sign 1: every channel has an owner but nobody owns the whole outcome
PPC is managed. CRM is managed. Content is managed. Development is managed.
Yet overall growth is nobody's clear responsibility.
Sign 2: agencies are effectively setting strategy
Specialist agencies should advise strongly inside their area. But if no senior person inside the organisation can arbitrate between them, the strategy can become whichever partner makes the most convincing presentation.
Sign 3: reporting is abundant and decisions are slow
More dashboards do not solve a leadership gap.
Somebody needs to decide what matters and what happens next.
Sign 4: technology decisions keep appearing without a roadmap
Platforms are bought to solve local problems but integration and ownership become increasingly difficult.
Sign 5: marketing and ecommerce targets are disconnected from commercial reality
Revenue, margin, stock, acquisition and customer behaviour need to connect.
Does that mean hiring a Head of Digital?
Sometimes.
If the role is full-time and permanent, hire accordingly.
If the business mainly needs a strategic reset, senior agency management, transformation or interim leadership, a fractional model may be more appropriate.
The test I would use
Ask whether important digital decisions now require more seniority, breadth or commercial accountability than the current structure provides.
If the answer is yes, the organisation has a leadership gap even if it has plenty of talented digital people.
If the business needs senior digital direction but another permanent hire is not obviously the right answer, we can talk through the options.
