The Ecommerce Numbers I Would Look at Every Morning
Ecommerce teams can spend the first hour of the day collecting numbers and still finish without knowing what to do.
I prefer a short trading view that answers three questions:
Are we on target? What changed? What are we doing about it?
1. Revenue versus target and relevant comparison
Start with the commercial gap. Compare against forecast, target and a sensible prior period. Do not use last year blindly if promotion, stock or calendar timing makes the comparison meaningless.
2. Contribution or margin
Revenue tells you volume. Contribution tells you more about value. Heavy discounting or expensive acquisition can make a strong revenue day less attractive than it first appears.
3. Traffic
Did demand change? Which channels explain it? Was the movement paid, organic, direct, email or referral?
4. Conversion rate
If traffic is stable and revenue moved, conversion is an obvious place to investigate. Split by device, channel and category before making site-wide conclusions.
5. Average order value
Product mix, discounting, delivery thresholds and customer type can all move AOV materially.
6. New versus returning customers
A healthy top line can hide a weakening acquisition engine if existing customers are carrying more of the result.
7. Marketing spend and efficiency
Look at total spend, major channel movement and whether volume is keeping pace. I do not need a tour of every campaign every morning; I need the exceptions that matter.
8. Product and category movers
What contributed disproportionately to the result? Is a hero product carrying the day? Did a key category fall? Is stock limiting opportunity?
9. Availability and operational issues
Best-sellers out of stock, fulfilment delays or payment issues can explain performance faster than a marketing brainstorm.
The most important field: action
Every material variance should end with an action, owner or explicit decision to do nothing.
A trading dashboard is not valuable because it has all the numbers.
It is valuable because it reduces the time between a commercial signal and a useful decision.
If your morning trading review is not producing clear actions, I can help you rebuild it around decisions rather than dashboards.
