What Does a Fractional Head of Digital Actually Do?
“Fractional” can sound like a complicated way of saying part-time consultant.
It should be more substantial than that.
A fractional Head of Digital provides ongoing senior digital leadership without being a full-time employee. The role sits on the business side of the table and should carry enough context and responsibility to make decisions, not simply recommendations.
Typical responsibilities
Depending on the organisation, that can include:
- digital strategy and prioritisation
- ecommerce trading and performance
- agency management
- acquisition and budget challenge
- CRM and retention direction
- conversion and customer journey
- analytics and board reporting
- technology roadmap
- AI and automation priorities
- coaching internal team members
The scope should not automatically include all of those. It should reflect where the organisation has a leadership gap.
What it should not become
It should not be an expensive monthly status call.
The fractional leader needs enough access to understand what is happening, enough authority to move work forward and enough continuity to see whether decisions produced the expected result.
When it works well
The model is useful when a business needs senior digital capability but:
- does not yet need a full-time executive
- is between permanent hires
- is going through a transformation
- has strong specialists but weak cross-channel coordination
- needs somebody independent to manage agencies and priorities
When it is the wrong model
If the business needs full-time people leadership, constant operational presence or owns a digital agenda large enough to justify a permanent executive, hire the permanent leader.
Fractional should not be used to avoid making an obvious long-term hire.
What good looks like
The organisation should become clearer about priorities, more confident in the numbers and faster at making commercial digital decisions.
The real output is not “hours of senior consultancy”. It is better digital leadership.
If the business needs senior digital direction but another permanent hire is not obviously the right answer, we can talk through the options.
